Banner's Admission Policy
The Banner School admits students who are motivated to learn and who will benefit from and contribute to the school’s goals.
Banner accepts student applications at any time of the year, provided there are openings. If a class is full, students are accepted first-come, first-served as openings occur. Before applying, we encourage you to arrange a school visit or attend one of our regularly scheduled Open Houses.
Acceptance is Based On
· Review of past academic performance (as indicated by standardized test scores, transcripts, or report cards). This review is done by the Admission Committee.
· Information from parents and current or previous teachers
· Observed behavior during the child’s classroom visit; and
· Confidence, on the part of the school, that the student can have success within Banner’s curriculum
Kindergarten applicants must be age 5 on or before September 1. Prospective students are interviewed and screened before acceptance. Exceptions to the state-mandated age of entry policy are granted by The Banner School when it seems a child is ready in all developmental areas: cognitive, emotional and social. The Banner School Kindergarten Early Entrance Policy
Exceptions to the state-mandated age of entry policy are granted by The Banner School when it seems a child is ready in all developmental areas: cognitive, emotional and social. The child must be born no more than 60 days after the regular date of entry. That means November 1st.
The Banner School has established a process to assist the teachers and admissions department make the best early entry decision possible. This process includes reviewing a written request by the child’s parents/guardians, reviewing the child’s academic and social information from his/her preschool teacher, and assessing the child during a classroom visit using our assessment tool.
If the Banner School allows the child early entrance to kindergarten, his or her parents are required to sign a document acknowledging the special permission. It also states the school’s expectations for that child to meet the benchmarks by the end of that school year or possibly be held back the next year. The Banner School cannot guarantee that should the child transfer to another school, that school will honor Banner’s decision for early entrance.
The intent of this process is to make kindergarten available to younger students who are capable of learning and working with older children. The Banner School takes this decision very seriously and wants to make sure that each child is ready to face the challenges of kindergarten and that early placement will not have a negative effect for years to come.
